Notes from session 2 of Mind Lab
"Learners are most likely to develop and strengthen their capabilities for living and learning when they learn with teachers in a school whose leadership creates conditions that stimulate key competencies." (MoE, 2014).
KC's need to be a living breathing part of school life and culture - not only the students following them, but the leaders of the school - all parties involved. Do our communities follow them as well?
Knowledge as a verb - a living breathing thing, we play an active role in creating knowledge
School values shouldn't need to be displayed - people should be able to arrive at the school and be able to tell you what your values are - you are living the values rather than just saying what they are

If we want to be responsible educators what we do in the classroom it has to be research informed and it definitely needs to be evidence based. What we say about our students needs to be evidence based.
Thought leadership - explaining what you are doing, justifying why you are doing that.
KCs are the keys to what? What leadership doors do they open?
Thinking - openness to new ways of doing things, analysis, how can we do things better, vision - where are we going? What is the purpose - lead a group to come up with the collective vision.
Using lang: leaders need to be skilled communicators

KCs and He Tikanga Whakaaro
He Tikanga Whakaaro suggests a Maori way of thinking / understanding. Macfarlane et al (2008) provide the following comparison between the KCs and the concepts of He Tikanga Whakaaro.
| Key Competencies | He Tikanga Whakaaro |
| Thinking Using language, symbols & texts | Tātaritanga (thinking and making meaning) |
| Managing self | Rangatiratanga (personal autonomy and leadership) Whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships) |
| Relating to others | Manaakitanga (a context of caring relationships) |
| Participating and contributing | Whaiwahitanga (engagement and participation). |
Leadership is part and parcel of what is expected of teachers
