My notes from Grant Lichtman "What 60 Schools Can Tell Us About Teaching 21st Century Skill" video

The following are my jottings from viewing Grant Lichtman's Ted Talk: "What 60 Schools Can Tell Us About Teaching 21st Century Skill" - things that stuck with me.

Critical thinking / problem solving
Asking questions more than giving answers
Systems rather than compartmentalising into subject silos
Finding problems rather than solving problems

Change in education is complicated, messy but is it hard?

Schools are permeable - off campus / online

No switching between brains - maths / science - crossing barriers of subjects

Self-correcting

Authentic reflection - thinking about what we are doing, empathy

Creative spaces

Thinking, designing building

We are a knowledge based industry

Who controls education? The adults or the learners?

Content rather than context - how can we flip that around?

Teach into the unknown - we don't know what the future is, we don't know what the skills are - need to teach our students to be self-evolving learners which means our schools need to become self-evolving instituatuions

Prepare students for their future not their own past

“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.”

― John Dewey

“Our job as teachers and parents is not to prepare students for something; our job is to help students prepare themselves for anything.” AJ Juliani
